

The Centre will take initiatives to strengthen the tracking and surveillance mechanisms to put a check on the use of VPN and the dark web. The Government will come up with a plan to identify and permanently block such VPNs with the help of internet service providers (ISP).ĥ. VPNs can easily be downloaded, as also many websites are providing such facilities for free.Ĥ. Technological challenges posed by VPN services and Dark Web are hampering cybersecurity of the country.ģ. VPN services are being used to bypass cybersecurity walls, allowing criminals to remain anonymous online.Ģ.

Last month, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs noted that the use of VPNs should be banned in India. Now that there is talk of banning VPNs in India, there is a fear among users that it would lead to inconvenience. Overall India is at fourth place after Qatar, UAE and Singapore. With a growth of 671% in a year, India has the highest rate of growth in VPN users globally. Global VPN provider AtlasVPN’s analysis showed that in the first half of 2021, VPN installs in India touched 348.7 million. VPN usage in India grew by 671% in a year To access many of these websites, Indian users are now turning to VPNs. There are thousands of websites that are now banned in India, using opaque and official or unofficial means.
